Honestly, do it for a year. A month means diddly squat, and by the time enough people know about it, the month will be over.
It really isn’t that hard to simply not see a movie in theaters for a year. Especially since 90% of them are total mind-rotting crap anyway. Read some books. Enjoy the internet. Do something worthwhile with your time and money.
Don’t buy new music for a year. Patronize the local record stores - buy pre-owned CDs.
Yeah Black March has a snappy name but I’m down for turning 2012 black. VOTE WITH YA DOLLAHS. Not that hard to abstain when you remember that every penny you spend on these jerks enables them to crush every website you love.
Continue supporting indie labels though. Sargent House, Deathwish, Touch and Go, Relapse, Rhymesayers etc. have nothing to do with this. If you like a band, spend the 5 dollars to get their music from their bandcamp.
Major labels are terrified of a world where artists control their own fate. A world where they sell their music for 4 dollars on a website and get more than .15 cents in return. The internet has made indie distribution easy, so easy in fact that bands don’t need a label unless they want one. Look at Radiohead. This is good for everyone. Bands can stream their music, sell it for less, more people buy it and the band gets a bigger piece of the pie. The major label is an obsolete dinosaur.
The same goes for film. Video is cheap to produce (compared to film) and YouTube and Vimeo allow producers and directors to reach a whole new audience, entirely outside of the major studios. Hollywood fucking HATES that.
The consumer having options burns the Entertainment industries up! They want you eating spoonfuls of Adam Sandler’s shit not watching 5 Second Films. They want you paying $150 a ticket to see Nickelback not paying $4 to hear some awesome 2-piece band (who represents Canada’s music scene in a MUCH better light). They don’t want artists and consumers to have control. That is not good for business.
So they try to pass legislation to have sites that MIGHT have some copyright violations down to kill this new indie threat. I think that is a lot of what SOPA and PIPA are really about. I wouldn’t be caught DEAD downloading any movie about some shitty sparkly vampires, but I have seen every episode of Epic Meal Time for free, legally.
Free or low-cost, legal entertainment is the future, indie-distribution is the future.
Eat shit entertainment giants, it’s time to die. No law is going to save you, no matter how much you pay.
